The Jumbo Size 4*4 Size off roader with extra sitting capacity and unique sitting style can make a lot of difference in SUVs . But the heavy sides and tall nose make it look big, massive and weighty, while its sheer size means the styling comes across as inept – BMW’s decision not to follow suit and build an equally large machine seems to be a clever move. There’s no denying it’s spacious – not even the Land Rover could match the Audi’s 2,040mm maximum load length, while the X5 fell 155mm short. The one-piece tailgate makes the area more accessible, too – were it not for the high load sill. Even with the air-suspension lowered, the boot floor is 830mm above the road, and when you combine this with the low roofline, the height of the cabin is limited. That hampers maximum load volume, and is also bad news for headroom.

The last seats are standard in the Q7, and they undoubtedly offer more knee clearance than the X5’s – although mature people will still be sitting with their legs splayed. Access is awkward, too, but more puzzlingly the middle row features a shorter, narrower and harder centre chair, which quickly becomes uncomfortable.

The Q7 range starts from £37,285, so it undercuts the X5. But both models have costly and extensive options lists – the extras added to our Audi raised the price by nearly £7,000.

The BMW E70 automobile platform is the basis for the current X5 SUV. It replaced the BMW E53 in November 2006. BMW's iDrive system as standard equipment and, for the first time in a BMW, an optional third row seat which has increased the seating capacity in the new X5 to 7 passengers has been aded in it. The new generation BMW X5 is 60 mm (2.4 in) wider, 165 mm (6.5 in) longer; with a 110 mm (4.3 in) longer wheelbase, but remains at the height of the previous generation X5 at 1766 mm (69.5 in). The SUV is manufactured alongside with the new, 2008 BMW X6 at BMW's Spartanburg, South Carolina plant in the USA. The interior of the new X5 is also completely redesigned. It has a large center-mounted display screen and simplified iDrive, the system found in the 5-Series and 3-Series.

It is speculated that another future "M-Sport" Model, due in 2009, will have a 4.4L Twin Turbo V8 (N64B44O1 engine) that will produce about 430 horsepower (320 kW). Transmission choices differ from that offered today - 6-speed Steptronic will be offered as a standard option.

The X5 is also the first production vehicle to use FlexRay, a new electrical bus system; it is only used for the control of the chassis damping system.

The German giant Audi is coming with R2. VW has decided to come up against Porsche 911 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage with its stunning R8, the company is now planning a new mid-sized engineered model to take on the Porsche Boxster and Mercedes SLK.

The high-performance two-seater cabriolet is codenamed R2, and is being developed with VW. Audi’s sister firm is also believed to be putting the finishing touches to a production version of the Blue Sport concept car revealed at the 2009 Detroit Motor Show.

The mid-engined R2 gets an all-new chassis and suspension derived from the MkV VW Golf. A four-wheel-drive variant is also a possibility, using a development of the Golf R32’s Haldex system. Plus, there are rumors that a hybrid – with electric power driving the front wheels – is planned, to help Audi reduce the CO2 emissions of its range.

The engine line-up is certain to include a mix of 2.0-litre four cylinder and 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged petrol units. A diesel is under consideration, but it’s unlikely to be offered from launch. All models will offer a choice between six-speed manual and seven-ratio R tronic semi-automatic gearboxes.

Performance should be stunning, with power outputs ranging from 200bhp to a spectacular 380bhp. Top speed will be limited to 155mph, while the 0-60mph time is likely to drop below six seconds.
